Five of the top players in U.S. Women’s soccer have filed a formal complaint that they want the same pay as the U.S. Men’s team when it comes to their performance. Read on for why they felt it had to come to a lawsuit!
This is SO SAD it had to come down to this! The U.S. Women’ s national soccer team has filed a lawsuit to demand equal pay and playing conditions as the men’s national team. Right now, they make about a quarter of what the men do, and unlike the guys, the women’s team has hoisted the World Cup trophy above their heads not once but three times, most recently in 2015! But that still wasn’t enough to get them the same pay and treatment as the guys, so it’s off to court!
Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Becky Sauerbrunn, Carli Lloyd and star goalie Hope Solo were the brave players to actually sign their names on to the lawsuit, but they said in a statement it was really on behalf of the entire women’s national team.
“Every single day we sacrifice just as much as the men. We work just as much,” Alex revealed on the Today Show March 31. “We endure just as much physically and emotionally. Our fans really do appreciate us every day for that. We saw that with the high of last summer. We’re really asking, and demanding now, that our federation, and our employer really, step up and appreciate us as well.”
Hope added, “In this day and age, it’s about equality. It’s about equal rights. It’s about equal pay. We’re pushing for that. We believe now the time is right because we believe it’s our responsibility for women’s sports, and specifically for women’s soccer, to do whatever it takes to push for equal pay and equal rights. And to be treated with respect.”
