Sony Working on 4K PlayStation 4.5

Is Sony working on a new PlayStation? Undoubtedly. Sony is also likely working on an upgraded version of its current flagship console, the PlayStation 4. Dubbed the "PlayStation 4.5" by those in the know, the rumored console would allegedly get a graphical boost that would allow the console to output games at a 4K resolution. And, of course, an upgrade GPU would also give the console better graphics for a virtual reality headset like the PlayStation VR—helping to bring its capabilities more in line with PC-based headsets like the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift.

And, no, we don't yet know what the name of the rumored console might be called, or even if Sony is officially working on one or not. Kotaku reports that various developers—who have themselves been talking with Sony about all sorts of things—are the source of the "PS4K" rumors. And while multiple staffers at Kotaku have independently heard these rumors, there's also the possibility that Sony is just testing out an upgraded PlayStation 4 with no actual intent to release it this year, if ever.

"We can't comment on rumors or speculation," a Sony spokesperson told Kotaku.
