Mystery of boy seen in Messi plastic bag jersey solved

The identity of a young boy seen wearing a Lionel Messi jersey made out of a blue-striped plastic bag has been revealed.

BBC Trending reported on Tuesday (Jan 26) that the boy is five-year-old Murtaza Ahmadi from a rural area in Afghanistan; a Twitter user had claimed earlier that the boy was from Dohuk, Iraq.

Mr Azim Ahmadi, an Afghan living in Australia, said the boy is his nephew and he was the one who posted the photos on Facebook.

Photos of the boy in a "Messi 10" Argentina national team jersey made out of a plastic bag went viral on social media earlier this month, sparking a search for the young fan of the popular football player.

When contacted in Afghanistan, Murtaza's father Arif also confirmed that it was his son in the pictures.

Mr Arif said the original photo of Murtaza wearing the plastic shirt was taken by his oldest son Hamayon, who then posted them on his Facebook page.

He said that Murtaza really loves Messi and football.

"It is not possible for us to buy (a jersey) for him. Because I am a simple farmer. So the kids decided to use the plastic."

Murtaza knows that he is famous now and "he is extremely happy", Mr Arif said.

"I heard from friends who have Internet. They called and told us about it", he added.

He said Murtaza is "hoping that foreign countries help us meet Messi".

The search for the boy's identity did not come easily.

A social media user has admitted that he made up the boy's location, saying that he just wanted to give the Iraqi town some "slight recognition", as it was where his parents grew up.

Three sentenced to death for gang-rape, murder of student in India

Three men were sentenced to death on Saturday (Jan 30) by an Indian court for the gang-rape and murder of a student, in a case that sparked outrage over women's safety.

A further three defendants were given life sentences for the gang-rape of the victim.

The court in Kolkata handed down the sentences following their conviction on Thursday. The 21-year-old woman was targeted as she walked home after an exam in 2013 in eastern West Bengal state.

Senior public prosecutor Anindya Raut told AFP: "It was a gruesome crime, a rarest of the rarest case." Judge Sanchita Sarkar handed down the verdicts in a packed court which included the victim's family.

"I award the death sentence to three convicts on charges of gang-rape and murder of the student and life imprisonment to three others for gang rape, criminal conspiracy and causing disappearance of evidence," Sarkar said.

Scores of activists and people from the victim's home village were at court chanting slogans against the convicts and demanding death for all of them.

Extra police officers were deployed outside the court following a scuffle on Thursday between police and protesters who tried to enter the court complex.

"Justice has failed us as two of the accused were acquitted and three were awarded life sentences," the victim's brother told AFP.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was grabbed after getting off the bus before being dragged to a nearby abandoned farm.

The gang attacked her as she returned from the university to her home in a village, 50km north-east of Kolkata, on June 2013.

She was found gagged and laying in a pool of blood in a field the next morning. Evidence showed she had been repeatedly raped.

Two of the eight accused were acquitted for lack of evidence by the court.

The attack triggered anger in West Bengal state and came just months after the fatal gang-rape of a student in Delhi in December 2012 that shone a global spotlight on violence against women in India.

The 2012 incident led to an overhaul of India's rape laws, including speeding up of trials and tougher penalties for offenders, but high numbers of assaults persist.

Japan doubles number of F-15s near islands claimed by China

  Japan has doubled the number of F-15 fighter jets deployed on the southern island of Okinawa, near disputed islands in the East China Sea, the defence ministry said on Sunday (Jan 31).

Japan's Air Self-Defence Force now has about 40 F-15s on Okinawa's Naha base, according to the defence ministry.

The move comes as Japan and China have routinely clashed over ownership of the Tokyo-controlled Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.

Japan administers the uninhabited islands under that name but China also claims them and calls them the Diaoyus.

Chinese ships - mostly coast guard vessels - and aircraft have approached them to back up Beijing's claims and test Japan's response.

"This is a very front line of national defence," said Deputy Defence Minister Kenji Wakamiya, quoted by Jiji Press, at the Sunday ceremony at the Naha base to mark the creation of a new unit composed of the extra jets.

The defence ministry moved about 20 F-15s from the Tsuiki base in the south-western island of Kyushu to Naha, the defence ministry said.

Ky. Detention Staff Used Aikido on 16-Year-Old Hours Before Her Mysterious Death

A 16-year-old  girl at an Elizabethtown, Ky., juvenile detention facility was restrained with a martial arts move for refusing to remove her sweatshirt during booking. The otherwise healthy teen was found dead in her cell the next morning.

According to WDRB, Gynnya McMillen was booked at about 2 a.m. on Jan. 10 for a domestic violence related offense at her home. After tangling with several guards over the removal of her sweatshirt, an “Aikido restraint” was used on the teen.

“The staff performed an Aikido restraint hold to safely conduct a pat-down search and remove the youth’s hoodie,” wrote a spokesperson from Lincoln Village Juvenile Detention Center in an email. “The purpose of having multiple staff involved in a controlled restraint is to ensure the safety of the youth and staff.”

WDRB reports that video surveillance shows Gynnya’s last movements came shortly before midnight on Jan. 10, about ten hours before she was found unresponsive.

Officials from the prison initially indicated they believe McMillen died in her sleep on Jan. 11, but after a social media campaign into the cause of her death by friends and family, they later admitted that a restraint had been used on her the day before. 

An preliminary autopsy gave no cause of death and said that there were no signs of trauma or drug overdose.

Hardin County coroner Dr. William Lee told WDRB, “It’s puzzling. You don’t see many healthy 16-year-olds die without a good cause.”

According to reports, three employees of the facility interacted with Gynnya three times starting at about 6:30 a.m.—offering her breakfast, a phone call and a snack—but when she didn’t respond, they left without checking to see if she was breathing.

At about 9:55 a.m., a deputy arrived at about to take Gynnya to her court appearance. Employees were unable to wake the teen and medical staff was notified.

CBS News reports that on Thursday that Reginald Windham, a Lincoln Village Juvenile Detention Center employee, was placed on paid administrative leave for failing to check on Gynnya every 15 minutes, a requirement for those in isolation at the detention center.

So, until you’re willing to lend yourself, your body and your voice to a message, to a cause or to anything more important that repetitive pop songs, put your top back on. Teach young women something:

Your body is powerful and your body is important, your body is beautiful and your body is yours.  For god’s sake put it to a better use than making men even more money.

Guus Hiddink, the Chelsea interim manager, has insisted that his players are unfazed by regular visits to Cobham by Roman Abramovich, the club’s owner, to watch training.

Abramovich addressed the first team a day after sacking Jose Mourinho last month and Hiddink revealed that the Russian billionaire had been a spectator at training on “several” occasions in the past few weeks.

However, Hiddink has embraced his boss’s desire to keep a close watch on first-team affairs and believes that his players are not feeling any extra pressure by his presence.

“It’s rather natural but that doesn’t mean every now and then you have to make big decisions,” Hiddink said. “I like them [the owners] to feel welcome not just in the official receptions before and after games.

BREAKING NEWS: Heavy Gun Battle With Boko Haram In Maiduguri

Explosions and gunfire have rocked Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, this evening as Nigerian Armed Forces engaged Boko Haram terrorists in a fierce battle.
The militants have been attacking Dailori and Walonri villages, on outskirts of Maiduguri, since 7:23pm and continuing at the time of publication.

Some University of Maiduguri students residing at 202 Housing Estate are now running for their lives as the conflict rages.

Hauwa Ba'na, a 300 level of Political Science student, told SaharaReporters that ''we are crying in our hostel because the explosions are loud and everyone is panicking.''

A Civilian Joint Task Force confirmed the attack to SaharaReporters, he said ''we are under attack by Boko Haram. There is heavy fighting with military in Dalori and Wanori.”

The military continues to fight back Boko Haram at the filing of this report.

KELECHI IHEANACHO IS A MANCHESTER CITY STAR IN MAKING

The 19-year-old Nigerian is no stranger to City fans but is yet to receive a great deal of recognition elsewhere, something which is sure to change in the coming weeks and months

It's time to talk about Kelechi Iheanacho. Manchester City fans know they have got a serious talent on their hands and, soon enough, the rest of the world will know what all the fuss is about.

The 19-year-old Nigerian, recruited after lighting up the 2013 Under-17 World Cup, only got his papers through last February and spent time at Colombus Crew in the United States and was even stationed out in Barcelona as work permit issues dragged on. He was wowing City fans before he was officially a City player - showing flashes on two pre-season tours and impressing for the club's Elite Development Squad - and moments like today feel a long time coming. 

After more than a year's worth of red tape, he has wasted little time showing what he's capable of, but still he is far from a household name

Just seconds into his second ever competitive senior appearance, against Crystal Palace back in September, he drifted into exactly the right area at exactly the right time to score a vital, last-gasp winner for a team who had established themselves as runaway favourites for the title.





Unfortunately for him, that fell the same day as Anthony Martial made his first impression on English football, coming off the bench to score a fairytale goal against Liverpool on his first appearance for Manchester United.

Chelsea had lost to Everton that lunchtime as Jose Mourinho's second spell at Stamford Bridge began to unravel, leaving Iheanacho pushed off the back pages and shunted towards the end of Match of the Day. 

Wider exposure would have to wait. Until today, perhaps. City boss Manuel Pellegrini has been criticised by many fans for failing to give Iheanacho more first-team action, even as Sergio Aguero and Wilfried Bony have missed out through injury, meaning he has largely had to strut his stuff in cup competitions or in late league cameos. It's hard to say he could have done much more.

The youngster scored on his first senior start, against Palace in the League Cup, and was - finally, in the eyes of some - handed a full Premier League debut against Norwich City in the next game at the end of October. That was one opportunity he failed to grasp and found himself limited to late substitute appearances, often when the game was long lost, for the next 10 weeks: he did not start another league match until January 16. 

In that time another League Cup goal against Hull City seemed to have fallen off the radar of the general football conciousness, and he was very fortunately credited with another dramatic winner, this time when Yaya Toure's shot deflected off his back and looped into the Swansea net.

It was at Norwich City in the last round of the FA Cup when he made it five goals in four starts with a cool effort from the edge of the box, but that strike and an impressive wider performance was limited to short internet highlights for the majority of City fans, let alone neutrals, given the FA Cup's limited television audience - and lack of illegal streams - around the world.

He had linked up well with Aguero in a 4-4-2 that day but the experiment was not particularly successful when tested again in the league against Palace a fortnight ago. 

On Saturday, though, he was chosen as the lead striker in a 4-2-3-1 shape and took full advantage. Just four minutes in he bundled home a corner - another instinctive strike - to put City ahead. Fabian Delph, the former Aston Villa man, had a toy snake waved at him by a young boy as he lined up the set-piece. Instant karma at work in the Midlands.

If Iheanacho's first goal of the day was somewhat scrappy, the second highlighted his huge confidence. Raheem Sterling had looked set to take the penalty he had won seconds earlier, but Kelechi took the ball - without argument, seemingly - put it on the spot, stuttered his run-up to fox Brad Guzan and then slotted the ball slightly to the left of centre of goal. It was one of those penalties that can look terrible if not done properly. But Iheanacho knows what he's doing. 

Clearly. Having been put through on goal thanks to a dreadful back-pass, he advanced on Guzan from just inside the Villa half, kept his cool, sized up the big American stopper, picked his spot and rolled in his hat-trick.

The evidence is there. Playing up front is no easy task for the best of strikers, let alone a 19-year-old, but he has shown that he has what it takes to play the role. The goals will speak for themselves but a fine cross-field through ball to Jesus Navas, reminiscent of his assist for Manu Garcia earlier in the season, was also sublime. 

Iheanacho has scored in all three competitions in which he has played this season and is set to be included in City's Champions League squad when the squad list is re-submitted on Tuesday.

With Wilfried Bony still a couple of weeks away from fitness - and, frankly, having failed to convince - and Aguero unlikely to play every single game from now until the end of the season, Iheanacho is ready to take centre stage.

Given that his previous exploits - largely in the cup - have failed to earn him recognition as one of the Premier League's top propsects, if not one of the best young talents in world football, a stellar showing in the FA Cup against the worst Villa team in recent memory is unlikely to win over a great deal of new followers.

Incoming: Chelsea kick in to transfer overdrive as second signing has medical

CHELSEA's transfer window is starting to gather pace as Matt Miazga undergoes a medical at the club. The 20-year-old center back has flown to England from the United States ahead of completing his transfer.

Sky Sports report that the New York Red Bulls man is at the champions' medical center completing formalities. Miazga looks set to cost Guus Hiddink £3.5m and reportedly caught the eye of Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal.

The American is set to be joined by Brazilian striker Alexandre Pato at Stamford Bridge.Pato has completed his medical but is awaiting confirmation to seal his loan deal from Corinthians. - [Daily Star]

NYC Has Paid Firefighter $125,000 for More Than 2 Years to Do

A New York City firefighter has been getting paid since 2013 while not having to do any work, the New York Post reports. 

Arnaldo Rodriguez, 40, has been at home for the past two-and-a-half years, culminating in some $125,000 in salary plus benefits, while the Fire Department of New York decides what to do with him. 

“It’s crazy. I’m in limbo land,” Rodriguez told the Post.

Rodriguez’s fiasco all began 13 years after he joined the Fire Department as an EMT. In July 2013 he was promoted to firefighter after becoming a “priority hire” as part of the department's settlement of a federal racial-discrimination lawsuit. 

Since he was a Hispanic litigant, the promotion was supposed to automatically make him a firefighter with seniority, and would have increased his salary to about $85,000 annually.

However, mere days after he entered the Fire Academy, Rodriguez told the Post, he was told to report for a hearing at the Office of the Chief of Personnel. At that hearing, Rodriguez was asked for his cellphone number and then told that he no longer needed to make an appearance at the academy. 

When Rodriguez asked what he was meant to do in the meantime, he said he was told, “You work for us. We don’t work for you. We’ll call you—don’t call us,” according to the Post. 

To date, he hasn’t been assigned anywhere. 

Rodriguez and his lawyer say they believe that the department is merely listing Rodriguez as a firefighter on paper to show that it followed the settlement agreement, without really intending to make use of him. This is accomplished, they believe, by making use of an off-duty concussion that Rodriguez suffered while still an EMT, which had put him on “light duty” in that job for years. 

His lawyer, Peter Gleason, told the Post that the Fire Department has repeatedly sought to question Rodriguez on the old injury, without clarifying his status with the FDNY. 

Furthermore, Gleason revealed, on Jan. 22 the department sent a letter saying that Rodriguez had been demoted back to an EMT on Aug. 2, 2013, although, according to Gleason, it refused to provide details.

Nonetheless, Gleason added, he got a letter on Jan. 16 from the city’s personnel office, which confirmed that Rodriguez was still a firefighter. Rodriguez’s paychecks also show deductions to the firefighters union, the Uniformed Firefighters Association.

According to the Post, a spokesman for the FDNY has refused to comment “until the department’s investigation is complete.

Amid his Twittet beef with Whiz Khalifa, West had the audacity to bring Khalifa and Rose's son into the fray. In a now-deleted tweet, West stated, "You wouldn't have a child if it wasn't for me." And he followed that up with saying that he owns their child.

In an interview with the Allegedlypodcast, Rose finally spoke out about West. 

"I would never talk about kids in an argument," she said to hosts Matthew Cole Weiss and Theo Von concerning West, who's dad to a daughter, North, 2 1/2, and son, Saint, 7 weeks. "It just shows the type of person he is. Even him saying stuff about my son, I still didn't say anything about his kids. I'm not going to. This is ridiculous. They're innocent babies. Rose went on to state that she's not surprised about anything West ever says.

"No, because I know him. I know he's a [f--king] clown," she said. "I know him. The crazy thing is that he came out with a song, I think last week, saying I had my son for a meal ticket, and I didn't even say anything. I was just like, 'Man, he's a cornball. I'm not saying [s--t].'

"I wouldn't have said anything if it was just between him and Wiz," she continued. "That's two grown men hashing it out. That's their business. I would have kept it cute and just minded my business, but you don't bring in my baby. That's so corny."

Texas police are searching for a man who shot and killed a woman driving on a busy highway.

Full panel of Nigeria’s Supreme Court of Nigeria today in Abuja sacked the entire contingent of senators and members of the House of Representatives from Anambra State. The decision swept away a host of lawmakers from Anambra State who were illegally foisted on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) by former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience Jonathan.

The court’s ruling ended the senatorial tenure of former Aviation Minister and first-term senator, Stella Oduah, and aborted the legislative career of former presidential aide, Andy Uba. Also affected are members of the House of Representatives elected on the ticket of the PDP.

Chris Uba, younger brother to Mr. Andy Uba, and Prince Emeka are expected to take over seats vacated by Mr. Andy Uba and Stella Oduah respectively. Former Senator Annie Okonkwo is in line to represent the PDP in a forthcoming election to fill a senatorial seat held by Uche Ekwunife who was sacked last December by the Court of Appeal.

Soldiers Kill Notorious Hippopotamus In Gombe Dam

Also speaking, the permanent secretary of the state Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources, Adamu Pukuma, said the state was committed to protecting hippopotamus to ensure they do not go into extinction, saying the killed animal was “notorious”.
A notorious hippopotamus accused of terrorising Yamaltu/Deba local government areas of Gombe State, and killing fishermen and farmers near the Dadin/Kowa dam, was shot dead by soldiers Wednesday, local officials said.

The animal killed many people in the last two years, the state government said.

Ismail Umar, who is the head of Forestry, Yamaltu/Deba Local Government, confirmed that the beast had been killed.

He said officials discovered the threat posed by the hippopotamus since 2013, and complained to the LGA about the damages it was causing them, and also requested permission to hunt it down.

“We were lucky to trap it outside. We used military men. And with the help of the local hunters, we shot it yesterday night around 10:30 pm when it came out to eat grasses, and today we butchered it in to pieces,” Mr. Umar said.

He said there were about 100 hippopotamus in the dam.

School Proprietor, 3 Others Arraigned In Kano Over Sodomy Scandal

Kano State Police command on Thursday arraigned the proprietor of Hassan Gwarzo College, Professor Ibrahim Ayagi, and three others following a sodomy scandal that rocked the college recently.
Their arraignment comes on the heels of an investigation ordered by the Kano State government.  The investigation was led by a high-powered Commission of Inquiry headed by a renowned academic.  Following the inquiry, the school was temporarily closed for nearly three months.

Dr. Ayagi and three others were arraigned on an 8-count charge of criminal conspiracy, negligence, abetment, failure to provide information, and joint action among others.

In his submission, counsel to the accused, Barrister Abdulrazak Bagwai, told the court that he was vehemently opposed to the arraignment of his client given that it was occurring prior to the date fixed for the arraignment.

According to him, his clients were subjected to ill-treatment by the police despite the fact that the court had restrained the police from re-arresting his clients given that they were granted bail.  Mr. Bagwai went on to ask that the court delay any arraignment until February 29, 2016, the date fixed by the court for the continuation of the hearing.

Disputing the claim made by Mr. Bagwai, the Police Prosecution counsel, Barrister S. O. Akwe, said there was never a time the accused persons were shabbily treated or unilaterally arrested.  The prosecution counsel stressed that the accused could testify to the polite manner they received at the hands of the police during the investigation.

Mr. Akwe also said that the reason for the early arraignment was to draw the court’s attention to an additional charge being made against Dr. Ayagi.

37 Bodies Recovered, 100 More Feared Dead In Cameroon Boat Accident

The victims included traders returning from the Lagdo market and family members returning home from a customary Muslim marriage ceremony.

After an accident involving two boats occurred last Saturday, more than 37 bodies have been recovered along the Benue river in northern Cameroon. Many more passengers are still missing.

Of the estimated 200 people aboard the two boats, only ten survivors have been rescued according to reports. Hopes of finding more survivors have been waning since four days have passed.

According to Cameroon’s public broadcaster, the country’s National Navy is still searching for survivors and victims.

The victims were identified as traders returning from the Lagdo market and family members returning home from a customary Muslim marriage ceremony.

In hopes of preventing similar catastrophes, the Governor of Cameroon’s Northern Region, Jean Abate Edi’i, has banned night travel by boat along the Benue river.

R.I.P 25-Year-Old American Nanny Found Dead in Austria Apartment

25-Year-Old American nanny Lauren Mann was found dead in her Vienna apartment on Tuesday, according to reports. 

Vienna Police spokesman Thomas Keiblinger told FOX that Mann, who worked as an au pair, was found half-dressed on a mattress in her bathroom after her employer called police when she didn't show up for work. 

According to NBC, the victim was lying near a "considerable amount of blood." 

"We are still awaiting the final autopsy report, but are presently treating this as a homicide case," Keiblinger told the network.
