GUUS HIDDINK HAS A WARNING FOR HIS CHELSEA SUCCESSOR

Chelsea’s probable failure to finish in the top four this year is likely to have a knock-on effect.

In addition to answering the usual questions pertaining to this weekend’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United, Hiddink had some words of warning for the man who succeeds him this summer (whomever that may be) – a lack of Champions League football might make it difficult to attract top players.

The Blues are unbeaten since Hiddink replaced José Mourinho in December of last year (a record that is slightly less impressive than it becomes clear that the record is comprised of three wins and six draws), and despite an upturn in performances, the chances of a top four finish are still remote.

As such, Hiddink believes it will take a strong effort to convince elite players to even consider joining the Stamford Bridge renovation project.

“The people at the club who have to deal with the near future look very well at what they’ll need to do to be competitive next year and how strong they must be.

“The club must also offer the ambition, even when you don’t play in the Champions League next year…it’s difficult but if a club with a big status can offer ambition for the future, then you can still be attractive to players.”
